An Unusual and Most Interesting Pair of Tudor Gentleman

The carver has depicted very carefully the dress of the two figures, which gives us a fascinating insight into the costumes of the mid-16th century.

Pendant fruits and a semi-circular daisy flower sit above the figures' heads, both of which have long flowing hair, moustaches and full beards. They both wear buttoned and pleated tunics, drawn in at the waist by a buckled belt. Their legs are clad in stockings and gaiters, and their feet are contained within a simple ankle boot.

Wonderful detail, lovely colour and surface.

English, circa 1550-80.
